I have this habit of being ignorant to those little little stalls where there would be more than enough people standing around each of those stalls giving out pamphlets or brochures to the public. I do not normally reach out my hands to take those brochures and most of the time I would just smile at those people and say thank you while hurriedly walk away from them. Hey don't jump to a conclusion saying I am bad okay! How many of you do read those brochures? Most of the people would just reluctantly take those brochures, as though they were forced to do so. And then they stuffed those papers in their bags and that's it. Some even better. They take the brochures and fan themselves, and they will throw these brochures into the nearest dustbins, right in front of those people distributing the brochures!
Now dare you say I am being cruel and that I am bad to those people. At least I smile and walk away. Why take when you know you won't read them? Waste paper only lah.
But then the other day I walked towards this particular stall in my college. No one forced me to. And I would never admit that the reason I walked towards the stall was because the boyfriend was standing there reading the brochures and that there were three beautiful girls explaining to him while he was reading the brochures. How could I not walk towards the stall lah you tell me?
It turned out that I'd made the right decision.
The three girls were promoting an exchange programme called Work & Travel USA by Out of the Box (OOTB Personal Development Sdn Bhd), which is the appointed agent for such exchange programme in Malaysia. This programme allows students of tertiary studies from all around the world to visit USA during their semester break to experience life in the US through working as well as traveling there. It can be carried out anytime so long as the students have at least 2 to 3 months of semester break to spend in the US.
And then I was told that student has to pay an approximate amount of RM 8k - 9k to obtain comprehensive medical insurance while he/she gets into US. That 8k too includes getting all the visa done and getting a job of your own choice even before you reach US, and you can choose whether to work for only half of your holiday and spend the rest traveling, or just work all day long to cover your expenses and come back to Malaysia being rich. Now how does that sound? I am sure one will be able to cover his expenses if he is hardworking enough because the girls said they went there last year, and their hourly wage was 7 dollar. You do the Maths. Possible right?
And so I was really attracted to join this programme. I mean, this is my final year and how long more can I still call myself a tertiary student? And so coincidentally I am going to have 3 months break in this coming June. Everything is like fated!
And so I thought this coming semester break is going to be really meaningful!!!
Yet I had forgotten my two old folks at home, even that's for only a minute. I understand them so well I was 99% sure that they would definitely say no to me. No hope. =(
But still, I went back home to try luck. Who knows they would be in good mood and then just agree to let me go while giving me sufficient money to travel the US. Heh. I know lah. Don't poke and break my well-built dream can or not? Dream a while can die is it?
First I approached my mom.
Me: Ma coming semester holiday I join a programme and go US work and travel can or not?
Mom: Ha?! You dont eat too full nothing to do I tell you. No!
End of Expected-yet-still-so-sad-and-disappointed-can-die Story Part I.
Then I approached my dad.
Me: *Pass the brochures to my dad* Pa see this. Can I go during this coming semester break?
Dad: *Looks at the brochures and never look at it again the moment he sees the word "US"* Go US? For what? Cannot! Why go so far and work? Cannot work in Malaysia meh?
End of Expected-yet-still-so-sad-and-disappointed-can-die Story Part II.
Why are my parents like that. =( *sniff sniff* They always jump to conclusions and give instructions without giving us the reasons. Very autocratic one. Sheesh. Lucky they are not in power to govern our country, hor? Else semua mati liao. That time Pak Lah's and Sami Vellu's cases are too minor to be mentioned already.
But I did argue with my dad cos he seemed to think that my idea of going abroad is so wrong. But I see nothing's wrong with it except the fact that he has to sponsor me if I were to go to the US. Then he came up with excuses saying stuffs like why my classmates are not going and why am I so eager to go, and stuffs like I-can-sponsor-you-to-go- for-vacation-but-working-there-is-definitely-a-no-no!
Okay lah you people are going to sooth me saying things like aiyah your papa loves you so much he just doesn't wanna let you go. He will miss you mah. 3 months you know?! Okay lah accepted. I know part of the reasons is because he might get worried if I were to leave him for so long. Yeah, 3 months time is consider "so long" to my dad already okay? But still...
Why are my parents like that... *throws tantrums while golek-ing on the floor*
Since I cant make it already, I've decided to share it here. If you are a tertiary student, financially okay and wish to experience something different during your semester break, go to the OOTB website and check out the details okay? And hopefully your parents are not as autocratic as mine. *sulks*
